Click here for the Update   Southern heritage is under attack again, this time in North Carolina. Under a plan soon to be announced, North Carolina history will be REMOVED from the eighth-grade curriculum, and will be replaced with a REQUIRED course in World Culture. If we're going to be No. 1 in 2010, we've got to do our part in social studies." Ms. Dunnegan needs to be told that depriving our children of an education of their state history is NOT acceptable. But you've got to look at whether you're getting more than you give up." Mr. Brogden goes on to say that it's more important for our children to learn about Latin America, because many Hispanics have moved into the state. Mr. Brogden needs to be told that this is backwards. People who move into this state should learn about North Carolina's history in order to appreciate the heritage of their new home. Our children should NOT be required to adapt to the other cultures that move here. Let them know how important you feel it is for our children to learn North Carolina history, so that they can appreciate their own heritage first and foremost. DPI's current plan is to REPLACE the current eighth-grade course in North Carolina History with three years of required courses in World Culture in the middle school grades! However, because public reaction was so strong in favor of North Carolina History, DPI has scheduled seven public meetings across the state to receive comments from NC taxpayers. For the sake of Southern heritage, it is important to attend the meeting closest to you and to speak up in favor of North Carolina history! The meeting schedule is as follows:   6 March: Central Cabarrus High School, Concord 8 March: Hoffler Building Auditorium, James Sprunt Community College, Kenansville 21 March: Professional Development Center, Durham 22 March: Western Region Education Service Alliance, Canton 27 March: Williamston High School, Williamston 28 March: Hoke County High School, Raeford 29 March: Holiday Inn Express, Highway 421 between Boone and Wilkesboro.
